Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice is now a modern classic of the genre. It's a riveting tale, telling the (vampiric) life story of Louis from his birth into darkness in New Orleans, exploration of the vampiric Europe, with an interesting framing device of the interviewer. It was superbly translated to the screen in the early 1990s, and despite my dislike for the work of Tom Cruise, the film is an enjoyable blood lusty romp and is quite faithful to the original text.
Well worth a read.
