NaNoWriMo 2013, and 42 Hallowe'en

NaNoWriMo 2013 is coming. (NaNo-what? Click here if you don't know what it is).

It's probably the most important month in the writing year, because writing productivity increases globally exponentially.

They say there are different types of writers, particularly during NaNoWriMo: planners, who plan obviously, and pantsers, who fly by the seat of their pants. I usually would describe myself as a pantser, but even then I have some modicum of planning, by working out where I ultimately want to be with my story, what points I want to hit along the way, and perhaps where I'm going in the next few scenes in a little more detail, although I don't plot it meticulously to the last detail, as I may perhaps define a planner.

I like to start NaNoWriMo with a totally fresh idea that I've never worked on, not prior to beginning NaNoWriMo.

Okay, I'll admit it. I'm not ready this year. I usually have had an idea by now to start tinkering with, to start thrashing out the start and the finish in my head at least, before counting down to midnight at 11:59pm, October 31st, as November dawns. I usually know that Timmy is going to be walking through the rain on his way to... and at the end, the vampires are sadly destroyed. But nope, not even a crappy idea like that.

So I have to get my thinking cap on to come up with a plot bunny by midnight next Thursday. But do I have time? Not including NaNoWriMo, I have a very busy week ahead next week, work, family, etc., aside.

I have an important letter or two to write before then. Not necessarily the sort of writing you might be interested in, but still a major writing exercise for me.

On the evening of Wednesday 30th October, 2013, I'll be celebrating Hallowe'en at 42, at 7:30pm, at Drummonds, New Street, Worcester, where I'll be reading a deliciously devilish story with a dark twist on salvation. I am really looking forward to this, as it is a piece that I have really enjoyed putting together, and I'm putting the final touches on it. I hope to see you all there!

You can also purchase a copy of Enigma in the Darkness in paperback there from me if you are moved by my performance to want to read more of my work!

Alternatively, you can obtain them online:

And then there's Hallowe'en itself! Thursday 31st October, 2013, I'll be at home, maybe celebrating All Hallows' Eve with my family, counting down to midnight. And then, on the stroke of midnight, as Friday 1st November, 2013, bursts forth, all Hell breaks loose as NaNoWriMo begins, and I must write at least 50,000 words in the month of November.

Last year I succeeded and won. But last year I went into it with a plot bunny. This year... well, we'll see how it goes.

In the meantime, I found a nice little tune on YouTube which might inspire you and me for the dark days ahead. Enjoy Mussorgsky's satanically melodic "Night on Bare Mountain"!
