NaNoWriMo Day 7: both Obama and Romney are to blame for the slowdown

As I headed into Day 6 for my 2012 attempt at NaNoWriMo, I knew that a tough day was ahead. I didn't have time to write on my lunch break, and in the evening, when I got home from work, I did not stop because I had a meeting to attend in a nearby town. By the time I had got home and settled into the writing, it was already11pm, leaving me an hour to get going.

Then I remembered it was the day of the US presidential elections. I love a good election, and I used to follow politics very closely. I still do, even though I closed down my politics/current affairs blog a long time ago. So the television, an eternal distraction for any writer, got switched on, and excitement built as I flicked around the news channels whilst I wrote.

At the end of day 6, I got to 11,993 after I had only written 1616 words, somewhat below the minimum daily target of 1667 words per day, and far below the expected total target of 12,500 wanted for the end of the day. Yes, I missed the target yesterday, and I feel I've let a lot of people down, not least my characters. In my defence, I feel totally justified in laying the blame on Barack Obama and Mitt Romney for distracting me from far more important matters, namely NaNoWriMo!

Writing for NaNoWriMo is starting to get exhausting. I have the book as exciting and fresh in my head and I'm itching to get it out of my head onto the word processing program and tell my story, but I'm starting to feel physically tired. I have found that eating bananas tends to perk me up, however, so I'm going to have a banana in the evening of Day 7 as I sit down to write.

As we now go into Day 7, I am setting myself the target of 14,000 words by the end of the day, and thus the first week. I would like to say I could reach 15,000 by the end of the first week, but I know that I would be pushing myself too hard to do that.

As Day 6 closed, I reached 11,993 total words, well below my declared Day 6 target of 12,500. The ideal targets listed below is based on doing the minimum of 1667 words per day:

Day 1 (ideal target: 1667): 2008 (2008 words written today)
Day 2 (ideal target: 3334): 4393 (2385 words written today)
Day 3 (ideal target: 5001): 6211 (1818 words written today)
Day 4 (ideal target: 6668): 8102 (1891 words written today)
Day 5 (ideal target: 8335): 10,377 (2275 words written today)
Day 6 (ideal target:10,002): 11,993 (1616 words written today)
Day 7 (ideal target:11,669): to be continued!
Day 8 (ideal target:13,336): to be continued!
Day 9 (ideal target:15,003): to be continued!
Day 10 (ideal target:16,670): to be continued!
