NaNoWriMo 2012, Day 5: Remember, remember the fifth of November....

Remember, remember, the fifth of November.... because that's when I plan to hit 10,000 words in my 2012 quest to complete NaNoWriMo!

NaNoWriMo is continuing at a good pace, with more or less two thousand words being written each day. The minimum target is 1667, and seeing as I started out only with the goal of reaching 25,000 within the month of November, I'd say I'm pretty happy with the pace I've currently got going on. If I continue at the pace I've currently set, I should easily reach 10,000 words. I'm roughly a day ahead of myself already.

Now, why am I doing this? Some people have written off (pun intended) NaNoWriMo as producing thousands of words of drivel, and to some extent, this is true. The important thing however is that words are getting written. Even if they are rubbish words, (I'm repeating myself here, but it's important that I do so) they are at least getting written! The work to improve and get a decent novel out of it can come later, in the inevitable rewrite and edit.

I have been writing for many years, and I have produced dozens of stories and poems. I am getting known on the performance poetry circuit locally, particularly as I came fifth in the Worcestershire Poet Laureate competition in June 2012. But although I enjoy the poetry circuit, but I ultimately would like to be known also for novels. My problem with that is simple: I don't have a completed novel yet. I've got folders of false starts for novels, but if I can overcome the psychological barrier and actually finish something of novel length, I will find it much easier to do next time.

So how's the progress doing? Let's see the numbers. At the end of day 4, I was up to 8102 total words. The ideal target is based on doing the minimum of 1667 words per day:

Day 1 (ideal target: 1667): 2008 (2008 words written today)
Day 2 (ideal target: 3334): 4393 (2385 words written today)
Day 3 (ideal target: 5001): 6211 (1818 words written today)
Day 4 (ideal target: 6668): 8102 (1891 words written today)
Day 5 (ideal target: 8335): to be continued!
Day 6 (ideal target:10,002): to be continued!
Day 7 (ideal target:11,669): to be continued!
Day 8 (ideal target:13,336): to be continued!
Day 9 (ideal target:15,003): to be continued!
Day 10 (ideal target:16,670): to be continued!
Please note the figures on my page on the NaNoWriMo site and the figures here on this site may vary slightly. I get my figures from the program yWriter which I am using. The figures on the NaNoWriMo site can be a little out, because I've been finding the NaNoWriMo site understandably a little difficult to reach around the midnight mark, when many people are trying to get onto the site to update their sum totals before the next day. If there is a discrepancy in figures, the figures on this site are the correct figures for end of day totals.

And the title still sucks. The Island of Doom is totally the wrong title to have for this current work in progress, but it's just a working title, and coming up with decent titles quickly is a weakness of mine.

I also don't like the lead male character's name. I've given up trying to come up with decent names (although the lead female character's name works like a dream). Time expended on those issues now is time subtracted from working on the novel itself, so I have decided I will tackle both title and character naming issues in the rewrite when I finish this book. In the meantime, I've given characters generic names, even if one of the characters isn't going to be and just simply isn't meant to be a Steven in the end.
